Contact our Risk Consultants
- Have a burning risk management question or just don’t know where else to turn? Call or email The Risk Team at 800-705-0538 or email rm_info@mica-insurance.com.
- A Risk Consultant usually picks up or immediately responds Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Mountain Standard Time, but you may have to leave a message.
- Your name, the name of the practice, and your MICA insurance policy number help The Risk Team identify you as a MICA member or practice. You can also let us know when you will be available.
- Even if your question isn’t in our wheelhouse, we’ll connect you with the right internal and external resources. The Risk Team is dedicated to MICA members’ risk questions and concerns.
- A Risk Consultant may follow up after your call or email with supporting articles, information, data, or contact information.
- MICA members and practices have unlimited access to Risk Consultations and often develop long-term relationships with our Risk Consultants. The Risk Team learns from you, too, and appreciates the opportunity to collaborate during each call.
Have a Risk Assessment
- A Risk Consultant can look for potential medical malpractice issues in your practice’s processes and documentation by reviewing policies, procedures, and medical record documentation, and interviewing key practice staff.
- MICA members have reported these assessments are collaborative, engaging, and worthwhile.
- To schedule your risk assessment, call The Risk Team at 800-705-0538 or email rm_info@mica-insurance.com.
- Our Risk Consultant will follow up either by phone or email to cover:
- how to prepare for the medical practice risk assessment and how much time the Consultant will need (between 4-6 hours);
- the consultative and educational advantages of a voluntary risk assessment;
- the policies, procedures, forms, and letters to be reviewed; and
- work out a convenient date, time, and format (virtual or on-site) for you and your team.
- The Risk Consultant will then send an email or letter that:
- confirms the assessment date, time, and format, including Zoom or Teams instructions for virtual assessments;
- lists the types and number of medical records to be reviewed; and
- ensures you have the Consultant’s and The Risk Team’s contact information.
- The Risk Consultant will see you at the practice or in a Zoom or Teams meeting for the assessment. Our Risk Consultants are educators, not auditors, and will bring knowledge and openness.
- Our Risk Consultants will share their observations and recommendations for improvement before they leave so the written assessment won’t be a surprise.
- You can rely on the Risk Consultant and The Risk Team for action planning, resources, ideas, information, and guidance. We’re happy to come back to see your progress and look at any new services and processes.
3 proven ways to decrease the risk of a lawsuit or a licensing board complaint include:
Building Trust: Sit or stand eye level and next to the patient and the patient’s caregiver, thank them for trusting you with the patient’s care, don’t use medical jargon or template language, and tell the patient and caregiver to take their time asking you questions.
Documentation: Immediately document who was in the room, the information you provided, your recommendations for evaluation or treatment, your instructions, the patient’s and caregiver’s questions, and your responses.
Follow-up: For all orders for lab tests, imaging studies, equipment and devices, consultations with other physicians and medical services, therapies, medications, and counseling follow up with the patient is critical. Medical practices should also follow with patients who miss, cancel, or do not show up for appointments.
